The AI Mirror: Reflection of Human Bias
Let’s be honest: AI is everywhere right now, and most of us are just trying to keep our heads above water as "AI sprawl" takes over our workflows. Whether we’re building our own models or just using ChatGPT to draft emails, we’re facing a bit of a Wild West scenario.
Most organizations fall into one of three camps—they either let everything in, block everything out of fear, or have no clue what’s even happening. In this talk, I want to move past the hype and look at the actual risks we’re dealing with. The core of the issue isn't just the technology; it’s us. I call this "The AI Mirror" because these models are essentially reflections of our own human biases. We talk a lot about AI being objective, but it’s trained on our data, fine-tuned by our preferences, and interpreted through our own confirmation biases. I’ll be showing some side-by-side comparisons of different platforms to demonstrate how their "personalities" differ based on how they were raised. We’ll look at why a model might give you a completely different answer depending on its internal guardrails and how our own perceptions—like the "Halo Effect"—can lead us to trust a tool more than we should.
By the end of the session, I want to give you a realistic roadmap for finding what I call "AI Nirvana." It’s not about finding a perfect, unbiased tool (spoiler: they don’t exist), but about understanding how to balance human requirements with technical governance. We’ll walk
some frameworks and standards, like MITRE Atlas, OWASP, and others, to understand what actual threats to watch for, and I’ll share some practical strategies for visibility and data protection. And we’ll mix in the bias conversation as we discuss the technical and human
interactions to help see the reality of how our technology choices can be impacted, and how to mitigate the risks. Instead of just reacting to the latest AI trend, you’ll walk away with a plan to guide these tools toward your specific needs while keeping your organization’s data safe.
